Halloween is quickly approaching and there are plenty of things to do in Des Moines to celebrate the day. Whether you have kids who are excited about the treats that Halloween brings or you're an adult who loves to dress up and have fun, there are plenty of activities and events to satisfy both camps. Here, we'll run down a sampling of them for you to choose from.
Halloween Zoo Brew
Head to the Blank Park Zoo on Friday, October 13th from 5:30 PM until 8 PM and enjoy the Halloween Zoo Brew. This rain or shine event is only for adults ages 21 and over. Zoo members are free while non-members pay $9. In addition to live music from AfterShock, a band that plays rock tribute music, there are lights, displays and lots of photo opportunities. Attendees are invited to wear a costume for the costume contest, but balloons are prohibited at the zoo.
Des Moines Community Playhouse
The Cursed Circus comes to the Des Moines Community Playhouse for the 15th Annual Hollywood Halloween. Attendees at the area's premier costume party can enjoy complimentary food, beer and wine while taking in the bedeviled sights, scares and scenes and dancing to a live band. Tickets are $125 or $75 for a young professional 35 years of age or younger. All proceeds from this event benefit education programs at the Des Moines Community Playhouse as well as the Kate Goldman Children's Theatre.
Science Center of Iowa
Grab the kids and make a date to engage in some Spooky Science at the Science Center of Iowa. Admission to this special, family-friendly event is free for members and included with the price of a general admission. Those who wear a costume receive $1 off their general admission price, too. During the Spooky Science event, you can enjoy getting treats from around the facility as well as live experiments, meet-and-greets with animals and special programming.
Valley West Mall
The Trick or Treat Event at Valley West Mall in West Des Moines is slated for Monday, October 30th. From 6 PM until 8 PM, mall customers can enjoy a coloring contest by Star 102.5 as they broadcast live from the event. TJ Party Rentals will have inflatable rides and magician Jonathan May will make balloon animals. Temporary tattoos, crafts and trick or treating at select stores will also be available.
