When you think of a library, what’s the first image that comes to mind? If you’re like most people, you’re probably picturing a boring building filled with dusty books and nerdy bookworms. And while you’re sure to find lots of books and bookworms in any library, today’s libraries offer so much more than that. Apart from the countless collection of books, library cardholders also have access to the latest movies, media, computers, and many special classes and events.
Luckily for residents of Corpus Christi, the Corpus Christi Public Library system offers all of those things and more. There are 6 different library locations throughout the city, with the La Retama Central Library being the main hub. No matter where you are, you’re bound to have a library nearby – each with its own extensive collection and services. To help educate residents about some of these great services the Corpus Christi Public Libraries have to offer, we’ve highlighted a few of their lesser-known offerings. Check it out!
1. Public Meeting and Conference Rooms
Need a space where you can meet and collaborate with a group of people? The Corpus Christi Public Libraries offer free meeting and conference rooms for non-profit clubs, organizations, and groups. Though commercial use of the library meeting rooms generally isn’t permitted, commercial entities can use the rooms for informational classes and presentations. If you’re interested in reserving a room, all you have to do is fill out this Meeting Room Application and submit it to the service desk.
2. Special Events
If you’re looking to do more than just read some books and browse the Internet, Corpus Christi’s libraries put on a ton of different events and classes. Whether you’re looking for something for the kids or you just want to get more involved yourself, the libraries have classes for all age levels and interests. You can go to Peekaboo Storytime one day, Taste of Murder Book Club another, and attend an Indian drum circle the next. For a full list of all Corpus Christi Public Library events, you can check out their online event calendar.
3. TexShare/Interlibrary Loans
When you get your library card, you’re getting more than just a key to access everything in the Corpus Christi Public Library system; you’re also gaining access to the TexShare database and book loans from other nearby libraries like the Mary and Jeff Bell Library at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The TexShare database has thousands of scholarly articles you can’t normally find online, and you can even access them in your own home.
4. Online Resources for Children
Looking for some educational, kid-friendly websites that your kids can use for homework and fun? Check out the library’s Links for Kids page. You’ll find several helpful resources for any homework problems, fun links to keep them busy, and even tips for keeping them safe online.
